In mid- September of 2005, American Medical Response (AMR) called upon A-TEC for support in preparations of Hurricane Rita making land fall. A-TEC was proud to send two Advance Life Support Ambulances down to assist their operations. A-TEC arrived before the land fall had occurred and utilized every minute they had with each and every assignment. Hurricane Rita made land fall on September 23, 2005, as a Category 3 Hurricane per the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, but packed a significantly larger storm surge that was felt from Louisiana to Southeastern Texas. A-TEC remained functioning along the Gulf Coast and here are a few assignments that they completed during their deployment:

Assisted with search and rescue operations in Houston, Texas

Assisted in multiple hospital evacuations

Assisted in multiple nursing facilities evacuations

Assisted with search and rescue operations in Beaumont, Texas

Evacuated an apartment complex

Provided EMS shelters

Provided emergency transportation from small regional hospitals to major trauma centers

Provided 911 response to bordering towns of Beaumont

Provided 911 response to the town of Spurger, Texas

Provided assistance to South East Texas
During this deployment, A-TEC provided a total of 1440 working ambulance hours. When all was said and done with, Hurricane Rita caused more than $11.3 billion in damage from Louisiana to the Texas Gulf Coast. Hurricane Rita’s storm accounted for a total of 120 deaths. From those only 7 were caused directly from the storm itself.
